Vengsarkar’s pep talk has done wonders
December 19, 2006 at 1:18 pm | In News, Sports | Leave a CommentFor once the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sharad Pawar should be complimented for his timely action to prop up Indian cricket team’s sagging morale by asking chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar to rush to South Africa and have a pep talk with the Indian team.
Former India skipper Vengsarkar, who has the distinction of playing more than 100 Tests for the country, did not mince words while putting across the frustrations of millions of cricket fans world over to the Indian team.
And what an effect his pep talk had had on the performance of the players as a unit was there for all to see.

Jessica case: Manu Sharma convicted
December 19, 2006 at 12:57 pm | In News | 1 CommentThe Delhi High Court on Monday ruled over a lower court verdict to convict Manu Sharma in the sensational Jessica Lall murder case.
The Bench comprising Justices R S Sodhi and P K Bhasin also found co-accused Vikas Yadav, son of Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav guilty. Vikas is also a co-accused in Nitish Katara murder case and is currently in jail.
Amardeep Singh Gill alias Tony, an executive with a multinational firm, was also found guilty.
The same Bench had sentenced Santosh Kumar Singh to death on October 30 in the sensational Priyadarshini Mattoo murder case.
Vikas and Gill were charged with entering into conspiracy and for destruction of evidence. However, the court acquitted five other co-accused.

Smokers, you are puffing radioactivity
December 19, 2006 at 12:53 pm | In News, Study | 1 CommentEx-Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko’s death due to polonium made headlines, but few realise that the same polonium is also present in cigarette that they smoke. In fact it is the main causes of lung cancer in smokers.
“Cigarette smoke contains radioactivity. Smokers slowly poison themselves and also the passive smokers with polonium 210 and lead 210, two radioactive materials. They do not suffer from any acute radiation disease as the Russian spy but may develop an increased risk of lung cancer,” says former secretary, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Dr K S Parthasarthy.
Different specialists have different connotations for the dose, but president of Tobacco Control Association of India, Dr Sajeela Maini says, “the risk cannot be ignored.”

Pepsi chief’s right choice: No fizzy drinks for kids
December 19, 2006 at 12:48 pm | In Food, News | Leave a CommentPepsiCo has been pushing the line that it is Pepsi that perks up TV, a message clearly aimed at the young, a message that has got the Health Ministry’s goat.
The Health Ministry is said to be contemplating a ban on colas in schools, where obesity among students is assuming worrying proportions.
But President and CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi says the company is willing to work with governments to wean students away from high-calorie drinks. She says that counselling and exercise are better alternatives and the company is willing to replace high calorie fizzy drinks with healthy ones in its portfolio.

DoCoMo inks 3G partnership deal with Hutch
December 19, 2006 at 10:35 am | In News | Leave a CommentJapan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers, NTT DoCoMo, is reported to have entered into a strategic agreement with Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong), a unit of Hutchison Telecommunications International, according to Dow Jones, quoting sources familiar with the deal. Under the proposed tie-up, the pair will launch 3G mobile applications over Hutch’s network in Hong Kong. Although no details are available, it is understood that the two companies will hold a press conference to flesh out plans of their proposed agreement.
The Japanese wireless operator has an approximately 25% stake in Hutchison Telecom (Hong Kong). Back in 2001 it said it was exploring the possibility of cooperating with its Hong Kong partner, including introducing i-mode in Hong Kong.
